Meet Louise Niyigena, Project Manager at XECO (Valedictorian, Class of 2017)
In this special Women in Tech interview series, we’re celebrating the achievements of Akilah Alumnae who have graduated from our two-year Information Systems diploma program. These fearless females are challenging the status quo and contributing to the growing IT economy as leaders and changemakers.
Describe your current role and the aspects you enjoy most
I am currently working as a technical project manager and my tasks involve following-up on the implementation of projects, communicating with clients to understand their needs and matching these to what we have to offer, ensuring that our resources are evenly distributed, and making sure that timelines are met. Every day is different and I enjoy all aspects of my role!
What are the main challenges you face in your role and how do you overcome these?
One of the main challenges I face is working in a multicultural environment, since the people I work with come from different cultures and thus have different expectations. I manage this by ensuring everything is explained clearly and by paying attention close to detail to meet their expectations. While this is a challenge, I also enjoy working in such an environment because it gives me the chance to learn about other cultures and broaden my soft skills, which will stand me in good stead throughout my career.
Why do you think it’s important for females to participate in the tech and information systems industry?
It is important for women to participate in the IT industry since technology is growing fast and we do not want anyone to be left behind because of their gender. IT is being incorporated in almost every aspect of life, and I strongly believe that women can be successful in this industry.
