We take pride in making the Akilah Group the best possible workplace for our staff. We emphasize personal and professional development and a work environment that keeps our team motivated, challenged, and inspired.

“I would describe Akilah as a high-energy, very hard-working, and mission-focused environment,” says Natasha Sukiranya, Akilah’s Human Resources Manager.

“We do our best to onboard people in a fashion that sets them up for success. We take pride in hiring people whom we identify as a great culture fit for the organization and technically capable, and then we have them hit the ground running. It is a very results-focused and collaborative environment, where you can expect a lot of support and guidance from your colleagues. I like to think it’s a very positive environment where we encourage each other to constantly do better,” she adds.

Constant learning, both professionally and personally, is a key value of the Akilah Group. “Learning from each other, whether it be yoga or project planning, helps us all improve individually and as a team,” Natasha says.

When the Akilah Group team met in Rwanda in August 2016 for our annual retreat, staff members shared their various areas of expertise through mini seminars. Topics ranged from public speaking and data collection to yoga and “saying yes” more often.

Growing Professionally

Since Natasha joined Akilah as Human Resources Manager in March 2016, she’s focused on setting up professional development plans for each staff member based on their individual learning goals. Akilah often invites consultants to train staff members in leadership, communication, and monitoring and evaluation to support staff in their day-to-day roles. This summer, staff members also completed training in PRINCE2, an internationally renowned project management method.

“We work really hard on our internal talent pool. We focus on promoting from within our staff group and giving people the tools they need to advance their career at Akilah. As an organization it’s part of our responsibility to build our staff’s skills and keep them motivated to grow. Furthermore, it’s key for employee retention. People want to feel challenged, learn new things, move on to bigger and more challenging roles. At the end of the day, the more capable and fulfilled our team is, the better our organization will perform.”

Akilah’s Culture Code

Perhaps most importantly, the Akilah Group staff collaborated on developing the Akilah Culture Code. With nine elements, including giving honest and direct feedback, celebrating achievements, keeping it real, and thinking outside the box (or, as we like to call it, draw the owl), the Culture Code is the DNA of the Akilah Group.

“I feel that culture is the heart of an organization — whether it be a tech startup, a bank, or a women’s higher learning institution. We worked long and hard to develop it. It was important for us that it came organically from within our team so it reflects what kind of people work here, what we are trying to do, and what kind of people we are looking for to join our ever-growing team. Having a strong culture that everyone believes in does not only do wonders for productivity and moral but makes us better as a team.”
