Gloria Mugisha, The CEO of SOMA Foundation Rwanda, and Davis College Alumna, class of 2022.

How did you become a CEO?

Coming from a Sales and Logistics background, this role wasn’t on my radar. However, a former colleague recommended me for the CEO position. Despite my newness to the NGO world, I embraced the opportunity. The hiring process highlighted my skills and professionalism, and I was honored to be selected as the candidate they had been seeking.

What is your experience, and what would you say are your daily responsibilities as a CEO of SOMA Foundation Rwanda?

As a CEO, delving into the heart of an NGO is both a challenge and an opportunity. This role calls for a blend of business acumen, financial savvy, and the grit and emotional intelligence honed during my leadership course at Akilah.

I embrace the role of the organization’s face, navigating countless meetings and upholding accountability. My work involves fostering relationships with global partners and funders, guiding my team with vision, and steering NGO development.

A pivotal part of my journey is continuous learning. Drawing on the growth mindset instilled at Davis College, I remain engaged and informed. From attending ceremonies to participating in webinars and workshops, each experience enriches my ability to share valuable insights. Embracing learning has become a cornerstone of my leadership, fueling both personal and organizational growth.

Did Education from Davis College/Akilah play a role in your journey to your current position?

Education from Davis College has been instrumental in my professional journey. The courses offered there provided a solid foundation in effective communication, which is crucial for daily interactions and NGO development. Learning how to convey ideas clearly and build relationships has been vital in my role as CEO.

Additionally, the curriculum covered aspects of social change and small business operations, equipping me with the skills to drive organizational growth and manage diverse aspects of an NGO. The comprehensive education I received has been invaluable in shaping my approach to leadership and enhancing my ability to navigate complex challenges effectively.

What aspect of Akilah/Davis College experience do you feel had the most significant impact on shaping who you are today?

Professionalism . This broad concept, spanning from effective communication to impeccable personal presentation, taught me how significantly appearance and demeanor can shape perceptions. The emphasis on proper etiquette and a polished approach has been pivotal in refining my leadership style and interactions, setting me apart and enhancing my impact in every professional setting.

What is your best memory of (from) Akilah/Davis College?

My fondest memories revolve around the vibrant community and shared experiences. I often think back to the late nights spent working on assignments and the collaborative spirit of our social change projects. Those moments of camaraderie with classmates are deeply nostalgic.

Serving in the Guild cabinet was another highlight, where I loved witnessing the campus come alive with cultural code celebrations like “cutting the cake” and dressing according to the respective colors. These traditions and the sense of unity they fostered are what I miss the most.

How can Akilah/Davis College best support Alumni?

Akilah and Davis College can best support alumni by fostering spiritual growth and leadership development. As a Christian, I deeply appreciate the emphasis on spiritual enrichment, I liked the concept of "Selah" introduced by Co-founder Elizabeth. Offering programs focused on spiritual and leadership growth would complement what we’ve already learned and help us align with our purpose and contribute more effectively to our communities.

Additionally, re-establishing the alumni network is crucial. Bringing graduates together can facilitate valuable exchanges of perspectives, experiences, and opportunities. It would allow us to support one another, share job leads, and stay connected, enriching our professional and personal lives.

When she's not immersed in her work, Gloria Mugisha finds joy in her spiritual life, spending time in nature, exploring new destinations, and cooking for friends and family. Her vibrant personality and love for connecting with others make her truly a people person, bringing warmth and enthusiasm to everything she does.
