New Student Guild Elected!

On Friday, after weeks of campaigning, the 2018 Student Guild officially handed over the reigns to the next generation of Akilah’s student leaders.

“Your ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.”

Parfaite Wirira, 2018 Student Guild President

Over the last year, the 2018 Student Guild Cabinet has implemented an ‘English Only’ campaign to encourage students to practice their English speaking skills, renewed the Guild Fund to support students in need of financial aid, and represented the student body with exemplary leadership.

And on June 1st, they passed the baton onto their younger classmates, the newly elected 2019 Student Guild Cabinet.

Throughout May, students ran campus-wide digital campaigns, interviewed with faculty, and shared their plans and goals for the year if elected. Both Day and Evening & Weekend students ran for the eleven open positions, which included Guild President, Vice President (Day and E & W), Minister and Assistant Minister of Education, Finance & Holistic Minister, Information & Communication Minister, Health & Hygiene Minister and Assistant Minister, and Sports & Entertainment Minister and Assistant Minister.

“I’m proud of the 2018 Guild for all that they did. Each guild has improved on what the previous one has done, and I look forward to what our newest cabinet will do,” said David Maeri, Dean of Students, expressing his gratitude before swearing in the new members.

As a sign of solidarity and support, new guild members are always accompanied by their predecessors as they take their oath and are sworn in to the cabinet. The shared moment represents the shared responsibility of leadership by all Akilah students.

“It’s not easy to lead others, but you can lead yourself, and by leading yourself everyday and setting a good example, you are leading others.”
