Rwandan Women Rising: Former U.S. Ambassador Visits Akilah for Book Launch
The Akilah Institute welcomed former U.S. Ambassador Swanee Hunt to campus on June 7 to celebrate the launch of her new book, Rwandan Women Rising. The book details women’s role in Rwanda’s transformation through the personal stories of some 70 women, including activists, politicians, and unsung heroes.
Hunt encouraged Akilah students to take inspiration from Aloisea Inyumba, an influential Rwandan political who bolstered women’s participation in government. “Aloisea inspired women around the world to run for parliament. Make sure you tell each other, ‘You are a young Inyumba,’” she said to the students.

“Those of us who have the ability to be helpful have to do this for the other women who are struggling.” — Former Ambassador Swanee Hunt
“Each one of you has a story. Each one of you has something in your past that no one else knows about … but I’ll tell you, that is your strength. You draw your strength from the worst things that have ever happened to you because you made it through and you’re sitting here in spite of what that is.” — Former Ambassador Swanee Hunt
“This education is going to push you ahead as leaders enormously.” — Former Ambassador Swanee Hunt
